NEW YORK, N.Y. - Martins Ferry's own Slick Watts was named Best Midwest Artist at the 7th Annual Underground Music Awards at the B.B. King Theater in New York last month.
Described as the "biggest and brightest national awards show for the indie artist" as well as the "Grammy's of the Underground," the Underground Music Awards are noted for celebrating the achievements and culture of independent Hip-Hop, R&B, gospel, and reggae music and fashion. The annual awards show featured Darryl "DMC" McDaniels of the legendary Run DMC who performed and was honor as a hip hop pioneer. Freeway also performed for the energetic crowd.
Previous winners include Slick Rick, Lupe Fiasco, MIMS, Styles P, Kid Capri, Lil Mamma and many more.
"I want to thank everybody who took time out to vote and support the Wattsy Music movement." Slick said after winning the award. "Winning Best Midwest Artist is an honor and it makes me want to work harder to reach new heights in my career."
During a very busy summer, Slick has also performed in New York City for the "America's Next Urban Superstar" competition and was invited to the Urban Music Awards as a VIP guest with the likes of KRS-1, DJ Grandmaster Flash and Swizz Beats. He was featured as the "Heater of the Day" on the top hip hop website AllHipHop.com. Also in August, Slick opened the "Russ Parr Bus Tour" in Cincinnati in front of a full Cincinnati Music Hall. Most recently he was also nominated as "Best Male Artist" & "Best Mixtape Artist" at the annual Ohio Hip Hop Awards. Voting is currently online through Sept. 13.
