Slick Watts Interview
SMM: Where were you when you heard your first rap song?
Slick Watts: That’s a good question. I would have to say in my kitchen. I couldn’t have been more than 7 or 8 yrs old. My older brother (R.I.P) and a few of my cousins were making dance routines up. I want to say the song was "Jam on it" I still like that song to this day! My younger brother did a remix to it a few years back. I think we need to do
another one!
SMM: How long have you been recording?
Slick Watts: I've been recording on a serious level since 2007. I can remember being in high school and college playing around on different voice recorders. But I really started taking it
serious in November of 2007. So it's almost been a full two years. It's funny because my whole 1st mixtape with Mick Boogie was created in a hotel room in Cleveland . I was working a job 12 hours a day 6 days a week and then coming home and recording the album. I still use the same equipment to this day!
SMM: Do you know the lyrics to the first rhyme you ever wrote?
Slick Watts: Haha. It had to be a poem. That's how I use to vent back in the day. Whether it was a hard time I was going through in my life or I was feeling a girl. That's how I would express it. So it had to be a poem. I don't know what the words were though.
SMM: What part of Ohio are you from?
Slick Watts: Good Question. Allhiphop.com had me on there the other day and said I was from Cleveland . People say I’m from Columbus . I'm actually from the Ohio Valley . I'm from Martins Ferry a small town in Eastern Ohio about 45 minutes from Pittsburgh . Shout out to all my people from Cleveland and Columbus but I'm from the O.V. born and raised.
SMM: What's the music scene like in your area?
Slick Watts: There are a lot of rappers in my area all the sudden. But there are definitely some people grinding and putting it down. I think by us being where we are everything’s kind of brand new. My team Bittasweet is definitely at the forefront of the movement. I host a party every Friday with Dj Suspence (Bittasweet DJ) at Club 304. We give away a Kashi shoe or purse every Friday! Shout out to everybody down home putting it down though. I just felt it was important to work from the outside in. So that's why people think I’m from these other cities. Shout out to WTRF news anchor Mike Anthony. They just did a story on me back home!
SMM: What are your top Five songs of all time?
Slick Watts: Pac - You aint never had a friend like me, Jay Z - You must love me, Eazy E -Real Muthaf***** G's, Too Short ft Rappin 4 tay -Never talk down on a player, Pac - White Mans World
SMM: I've noticed you hit the mixtape circuit hard, what was your method behind that?
Slick Watts: I just felt like until I put my album out that's the best way to stay relevant. Shout out to DJ Blazita she always holds me down. I had a song called (What You Gonna Listen To?) on her Natural Born Killaz Mixtape. That track was produced by Vinny Idol so that’s a good look. Shout out to all the DJ's who put my stuff on there tapes. My man DJ
Suspence Bittasweet's official DJ has kept my music in heavy rotation as well. Major websites have shown me a lot of love. First and foremost Rapmullet.com (Big Chew has always been supportive from day one) Allhiphop.com (& Steve Raze) I just had the heater of the day on there. Hiphopgame.com(& Brian) have posted a lot of my new videos. So I
think that all goes into staying on people's radar. It's not just about the mixtapes but the websites and blogs as well
SMM: What was some of the best advice you received in the music industry?
Slick Watts: Stay humble and work hard. Nobody wants to work with a person who thinks they know everything and isn't willing to listen and learn. I think that’s one thing that my manager and I do well. Another thing I learned is to build relationships. I was fortunate enough to be able to sit down wit Tone Capone and take some notes from him. professionalism can open a lot of doors for you. Never be afraid to ask questions. I'm always learning, always trying to pick somebody’s brain for information. Hopefully I’ll get to sit down wit Quincy from ITW soon and learn from him as well.
SMM: Where and What was the best show you performed at?
Slick Watts: It was just the other day! I opened the Russ Parr Bus Tour in Cincinnati . 2,000 kids at 8.A.M. That was definitely the best show I performed at so far. A lot of more established artist performed as well like Ace Hood, Yo Gotti, Letoya Luckett, and Hurricane Chris. Shout out to my JL who sang the hook on my song "Yes we Can" The kids love the
track so I can't complain. I had a great time. Thanks to Radio One and Ourstage.com for choosing me to open the show.
SMM: What current project are you working on?
Slick Watts: Right now it's all about the Street Album. I’m going to put out in the near future. We're getting everything lined up from the music, promotion and singles. I'm definitely trying to take the next step with this album. I want to get Mick Boogie to host the album. We've got a lot of dope production on the album as well. This will blow anything else that I’ve done out the water. So stay tuned....
